Types of Mortars Used In Civil Engineering


Mortar is produced by mixing a binding material with fine aggregate with water. In civil engineering purpose, different types of mortars are used.

  • Cement mortar
  • Lime mortars
  • Surki Mortar
  • Gauged Mortar
  • Mud Mortar
  • Lightweight Mortar

Cement Mortar : Cement mortar is a type of mortar where cement is used as binding material.

Lime mortars : Lime mortar is a type of mortar where lime is used as binding material and and sand is used as fine aggregate.

Surki Mortar : Lime mortar is a type of mortar where surki is used as binding material and and sand is used as fine aggregate.

Gauged Mortar : Lime mortar is a type of mortar where cement and lime are used as binding materials and and sand is used as fine aggregate.

Mud Mortar : Lime mortar is a type of mortar where mud and lime are used as binding materials and saw dust, rice husk or cow-dung is used as fine aggregate.

Lightweight Mortar : A type of mortar which is prepared by mixing saw dust, rice husk, jute fibers, coirs, asbestos fibers etc. along with sand and lime or cement.
