Difference Between Bonding Molecular Orbitals (BMO) And Anti-Bonding Molecular Orbitals (AMO)


Bonding molecular orbital is formed by the addition of overlapping of atomic orbitals, Simply called BMO.

Ψ (MO) = ΨA + ΨB.

Anti-bonding molecular orbital is formed by the subtraction of overlapping of atomic orbitals, Simply called AMO.

Ψ (MO) = ΨA – ΨB.

BMO

  • Formed by addition of atomic orbitals
  • Density of electrons is increased b/w the nuclei
  • Lower energy than atomic orbitals
  • May or may not have a node



AMO

  • Formed by subtraction of atomic orbitals
  • Density of electrons is decreased b/w the nuclei 
  • Higher energy than atomic orbitals 
  • Always have a node
